Raiders PROMISE Project
Preventing Raiders Opioid Misuse in a Safe Environment
(A sub-project of the Opioid Misuse Prevention Project, OMPP)
The PROMISE Project is an opioid misuse community prevention project located in Tamaqua, PA and is funded by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD), the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). With PROMISE standing for Preventing Raiders Opioid Misuse in a Safe Environment, the immediate goal is to provide support to middle school students and families within the Tamaqua community in order to prevent the onset of substance misuse. The long-term goal is to prevent opioid misuse later in life by providing youth with the skills and knowledge during the preteen and teenage years. The hope is that youth will use these skills and knowledge to avoid using any substances and to seek pro-social opportunities instead.
There are four main components to the PROMISE Project. These include the Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP), Botvin’s Life Skills Training (LST), Communities That Care’s Social Development Strategy (SDS), and a Prevention Messaging Campaign.
- Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP 10-14)
- LifeSkills Training (LST)
- Social Development Strategy (SDS)
- Primary Prevention Messaging Campaign (PPMC)
As a part of this project, information is being gathered to document the effectiveness of the above-mentioned components. PROMISE collects pre-survey and post-survey data on youth knowledge and attitudes about substances in both the SFP and the LST components. Pre and post survey data is also collected from parents/caregivers in the SFP program. The school district’s PAYS data is also used to examine the effectiveness of this project, as well.
